I use software called 'Tree Shadow Locator'. It is produced by US
Consulting
Arborist Russ Calver and is a shareware item downloadable at
www.tree-tech.com
BRE have just issued their new formula for calculating light loss from
hedges: their website has details.
At 5m, unless the yew are quite young, the proposed separation distance
would be inside the BS5837:1991 Table 1 distance.

I've been asked to write a proof of evidence for a planning inquiry in the
next few days - as if I didn't have enough to do already!...
The main problem is the developer wants to build a 3 - 4 storey block of
flats about 5m from a line of mature, TPO'd yew and other trees.... Even
their own plans show the crowns against the windows of the flank walls!
If the new residents are into light deprevation, all well and good but
otherwise I envisage a few conflicts arising if the flats get built.
I'm aware of APN 5 "Shaded by Trees" and the latest version of "Hedge
Height
and Light Loss" on the DTLR web-site, but can anyone point me towards:
- Any other methods for calculating / displaying the effects of tree
shading
on buildings,
- Any useful references / precedents?
