At 5m, unless the yew are quite young, the proposed separation distance
would be inside the BS5837:1991 Table 1 distance.

That may be the case, and as we all know BS 5837 has inherent problems.
However if one was to look at paragraph 6.3.4 it clearly states that the
future spread of the tree should be taken into account. I have won appeals
based on this argument (Yew trees in particular). This is also pointed out
directly below Table I  in note 1, but I guess because it is in small print
it tends to be easily missed or ignored. I try to look at the wider issues,
rather than just recommended minimum distances where possible. Some out
there may disagree but I feel this is an approach that should be made by us
all when dealing with trees on development sites, especially as BS 5837
appears to be the most definitive tool we have at this time.
