Couldn't- okay, didn't- get to the stem so can't be categorical about tar
spots,
but nothing else indicated phytophthora and tree not noticeably in steep
decline
so probably not. So what else turns branch bark cambium into a black sheet???
Perhaps local provenance of Salem?? Better ideas?

Are there any tarry (or dark marmalade-coloured) spots or exudations on the
stem or limbs. If there are it would tend to suggest your tree has
Phytopthora bleeding canker of lime. This can certainly kill the cambium,
and in my experience leads to v. rapid degradation in the strength of the
wood in the affected part.

A quick test for you P&D bofs.
Mature common lime sheds modest size LIVE branch (4mx10cm) from mid
crown,
targeting old dears head in garden (rural idyll), just missing but
creating
extra washing.
Limb definitely live if a bit on the dry side, but all the cambium a
sheet of
black, not streaked or mottled. Branchwood otherwise appears pretty
much normal,
perhaps a tiny bit bleached and fibrous. Some medium sized deadwood
scattered
through crown but not exceptional for size and age. Stem not
accessed due to
decades of sucker growth and serious ivy, but no obvious problems.
Any answers? (No need to gift wrap).
John
