Having used an R300 for several years I find it a good way of printing out a picture of where a problem might lie but it still remains data which is dangerous to over interpret.
The friction build up on the drill or the drag effect can effect the readings so apparent resistance might be caused in part by drag and be indicating timber density where there is less than you thought.
Using the drill bit with a freehand electric drill gives one a better feel for the comparative density of the timber which can be judged as much by the resistance when the bit is extracted as when it is boring. Timber density does not equate to strength to a fractometer test might be a good backup if the butt decay profile is approaching danger levels.
