Title: Growing Trees In Large Planters
There is no reason why trees cannot be containerised and moved around, as long as certain stricures are observed -species selection, keeping them stable during movement, aftercare, feeding, watering, staying out of draughts. Looked after they become a sort of 'big bonzai'.

I planted 4 specimens of arbutus unedo into custom designed and built green oak planters containing about a cubic metre of fill in a coastal location [Criccieth] about ten years ago. Two are still growing strongly. As ever the main problem is aftercare and maintenance. The local town in bloom committe took over the aftercare and decided that a couple were a little 'sickly' and whipped 'em out, before I could persude them that being evergreen they would shed leaves constantly.

Subject: Growing Trees In Large Planters

Does anyone have experience of, or can suggest any references that they can suggest on growing trees in large planters?

I'm pretty sure that I once read that in some European cities planting schemes had been introduced using trees planted in large containers that could be moved on / planted out at a later date using forklift trucks (planters with pallet like bottoms) or cranes (planters with pre-designed lifting points.) And if my memory serves me correctly I think I saw some in use in a Windsor High Street a while back?

I'm trying to come up with a novel solution for the planting of a market place that has recently been refurbished with a large grant from English Heritage. Local residents / politicians have now decided that they would like to further enhance the area by planting trees but English heritage are opposed to tree planting, stating that they think it will be out of character and will damage the flagstone paving that they grant aided. They have also slipped in a nice threat of wanting their grant back if a scheme is implemented!

Any thoughts or leads would be greatly appreciated.
