On waste, it always amuses me to hear the bleeding hearts whining about the
paucity of electric car use. It has obviously never occurred to them that
the leccy has to get generated somehow and that currently means... fossil
fuel burning. At last I read of a govt. scientist who has come out in favour
of nuke stations. N-power is, after all, the only large capacity clean fuel.
Ooh-rah.
The TREEVOLUTION paper on top-handled saws is actually rather good: being
written by Liam it is both down-to-earth and thorough and doesn't really
impose additional burdens on climbers beyond those required by the 'Guide to
Good Climbing Practice' anyway. What it does do, is to highlight the risks
from improper use of a top-handled saw in different scenarios, and provides
an alternative way of achieving the same result. Also, it outlines the
circumstances where it is necessary, (desirable?) and safe to use them
one-handed, ie at full stretch and clear of ropes etc.
Now then Bill, if I can read it just so I can keep an eye on other people's
climbers (I'm supervising three contracts at the mo), I would humbly suggest
that it deserves your urgent attention so you can better supervise your own,
the undoubted abilities of your boys notwithstanding. I can almost hear the
exchange now: Anderson & Sons employee to grizzled boss: "Why don't you come
out to work anymore Bill?" Grizzled boss: "Some poor bastad has to read all
the HSE stuff" :-)
Julian.
