Subject: Highway Tree Pruning By Adjacent ResidentsHas any one had experience of residents taking it upon themselves to prune highway trees and what action (if any) did you take to stop a domino effect occurring with other residents deciding to prune themselves?
I'm dealing with a complaint that a couple of residents have re-pollarded Limes upsetting the aesthetics of an avenue setting. So its not just a case of abating a nuisance. I don't think the authorities maintenance is in any way unreasonable, the trees were previously pollarded to 5 metres above street level three years ago and since then the trees have put on about 3.5m re-growth. We have removed epicormics in June each year, and carried out crown lifting to the height of the pollarding point last year.
I'm looking at doing a positive press release on why the council maintain highway trees and the efforts that we will go to protect them as a public asset, coupled with a letter to the residents of the street in question.
Only problem is I'm not sure how far we will be going to protect them in terms of action we can take without any witnesses!
