Graham,
Tough wood, you're going to get some treeology from me.

Old wives tales, that's exactly what it is, I reckon.

Take 3 trees, 1 oak and 2 ash. I reckon that, if say the oak leafs earlier
than the ash one year, the following year it may be the other way around,
ash leafs before oak. But say for example on the same 3 trees the following
year, 1 of the ash's leafs first, then the oak and then the second ash.
What's that all about then, I think its subtle genetic variation in hormones
responding to the change in season. 1 tree happened to react to the seasonal
change quicker than its neighbour.

The thing is, it's not a whole species that leafs before the other, it
varies from place to place and not so far apart either. In one farmers field
hedge it may be oak before ash, but on another field hedge on the other side
of the village it may be ash before oak.

Or am I just telling tales?

Ben
