When I first moved to Northern California, with a graduate degree, several
years experience, and the first full time consultancy in the Bay Area, I was
asked to join the California Arborist Association. The organization
required review of several jobs by a membership committee. One of the
members rejected my application saying, "What are we going to judge her on?
Punctuation?"

A new day has dawned.

This has come as a bit of a shock to me, but I actually agree with Andy on
this. What is the practical element of this course? How many hours aloft
are
included in the syllabus? Of these, how many include the use of a
chainsaw?

This may well be a theory-based degree and if so, that's fine. God knows,
many allegedly practical-based college courses turn out climbers who are
frankly unemployable.

But let's be clear: a degree called 'arboriculutre' should include a
strong
practical element. If not, the course should be called 'theoretical
arboriculture', or its credibilty - and that of those who hold it - will
ultimately suffer.

On a positive note, yes it is good news that so many passed the degree so
well. Unless, of course, you marked it yourself {:o) !!!

Julian.
