Oh dear yourself!

How sad that an otherwise free thinking arboriculturist won't believe his
eyes unless its with regard to the printed word!

No doubt I should be grateful for the lecture, but the trouble with you tree
systems types is that observations that contradict literature are often
brushed aside. Too much tree theory - at which lets be clear you are a
master - and insufficient tree practice perhaps.

I didn't say that G.aesculi always kills trees or anything extreme like
that. However, no matter how you construct sweet phrases to argue against
it, strip a tree of 90% + of its foliage for a few years running and it
won't do it any good. OK so a moderate dose of late season Guignardia may
not be too problematic but, you know, if horse chestnuts didn't need leaves
for seven months of the year don't you think they might have adapted as a
result?

Here's a tip: facts don't just occur in pubications, they are not just
theories: they can and frequently are based on observation. Take thy nose
from thy library and go and have a look! Yes S & W is a good text and yes
its based on the best data available at the time. But if this data is
incomplete then so will be the text. Why is this not obvious?

Let's take 'pathogen evolution' as an example. The disdain dripping from
your use of the phrase makes it crystal clear that pathogen's don't evolve
unless you've read about it first. If this were the case, why was S&W
updated in 2000! Of course pathogen's evolve, hybridise, mutate, and rise
and fall in significance - every other organism does. Q: which came first -
P.ramorum killing oak trees or the publicity surrounding it? Dohhh.

No doubt you think that being rude to me will endear your opinions to the
forum, which of course it might. I however have never been impressed by
blinkered thinking and I see no reason to make an exception this time simply
because weaknesses of argument are hidden by personal attack.

Right, I'm off to start rotting some eggs ready for Cambridge, then we'll
see whether I can hit anything other than my foot {:o)

Julian.
