But there is also a need for the professional tree careperson who must
interact with planners, architects, engineers, lawyers, judges, risk
managers, politicians, bureaucrats, ad nauseam. It is both a question of
technical training, shophistication, confidence, ability to communicate and
of perception by other professions.
All those professional degree types (lawyers, architects, engineers, etc.)
have quite an opinion of themselves. They are trained in their professional
schools to have quite an opinion of themselves and the world for them is
framed only in terms of their expertise (unfair to the enlightened ones to
be sure). There is a tendancy for them to look down their noses at the
trades... or if more tolerant then to just consider them trades, need we
think more?
I've just about lost faith in all the 'professions' Scott, partly because
their 'looking down their noses at the bloke with boots on' gets thoroughly
up my nose. I have had recent experience of the legal profession being
completely wrong, and you don't have to look far to find examples of other
professions behaving in a completely unprofessional way. This is possibly due
to the professional arrogance that seems to be a common component of all the
professions, do they have a special arrogance module in their courses?
Fortunately the government in this country is determined to devalue the
degree qualification by insisting that 50% of the nations youth should go to
University. This appears to me to guarantee a drop in standards, unless
they're going to organise degrees in burger flipping.
So what this means to me is I'll soon be able to sneer at the professionals
safe in the knowledge that their degree will probably only guarantee that
they can ask 'do you want fries with that? in a reasonably polite manner.
Me: Bitter?
Possible over reaction there, but you probably realise what I'm getting at.
Bill.
