Bettina I saw something recently but I don't recall if I saved it. Mostly
the same conventional wisdom..... Ivy does not "strangle" a tree. Biggest
problems are shading out tree foliage leading to tree decline and increasing
wind drag. The latter can be overstated by the anxious to prune arb. There
needs to be a more than usual risk of failure IMO.

The other concerns are for the arb.... harder to climb, harder to inspect for
structural problems. Somehow these trees with ivy survived for millenia
without our risk inspections.

I do recall now the source I saw recently was a UK web site. Showed the
quintessential English cottage covered in vines.

Another issue is rodent habitat. Just this week we're having quite a problem
with squirrels having chewed through the roof shingles and running around in
the rafters. Their easiest path to the roof was up a too close hemlock,
thence up the ivy wrapped so picturesquely around the chimmney to the roof.

Morning all,
Can anyone point me in the right direction for current information on Ivy in
trees and its affect (or not) on the tree? All I have is an AAIS note from
1990 by Derek Patch. Many thanks,
B

P.S. Thanks for all the info on red wine and corks. Looks like I will have
to change where I shop in future.
