Hi Bettina,
I think you need to ask those who are petitioning for more detail regarding
their reasons to remove the Ivy. You can then decide as to whether they are
reasonable or not. From my experience most people regard Ivy as parasitic
which as we all know isn't so although you have pointed out that the Ivy
could become a problem in the future...........due to is competitive
growth? So tell them to come back in 5-10 years time.

Thanks for all the info on Ivy and trees. I am actually looking for an
argument against removing Ivy for the following scenario -
A resident has a very large, mature, healthy and vigorous Cedar (TPO'd) in
their front garden. It forks into 3 main stems about 600mm off the ground.
The resident has planted variegated Ivy at the base and draped it over the
fork. The other residents in the close have sent in a petition insisting
that the Authority make them remove the ivy as it is damaging a protected
tree.
My opinion is that it will be a quite a while before the Ivy has any impact
on the tree, and I wanted a few general facts of Ivy vs trees to put in my
response to the petitioning residents.
Anyone else faced this sort of thing?
Regards, B
