Hi Noddy,
I refer to the Mewp and/or crane but wouldn't want to close the doors to
other 'safer methods' and If you know of any (including Common Sense
Training) then give me a call. Fortunately we don't carry out sectional
felling too frequently and it is on these odd occasions that one has a
refresher/re-assessment of the operation. Recently we had to pollard a line
of several Willow near a house and car port by dismantling in sections. I
am told that because of their small diameter this was a tricky operation
and resulted in an injury. In foresight I would have rather felled the damn
things than risked my own men. No option for Mewp because of site
restriction. That's why good communication between staff and management is
essential, especially when faced with something other than the norm. Staff,
Management and Tree Officers should therefore all posses common sense and
be reasonable when requesting for such tree works. An opportunity to review
and change job specifications could then be carried out for health & safety
reasons. .
All the best and a Happy Christmas
Ian

Hi Ian
I'm a little confused as to what "other safer working practices" are! Until
I see or read details making a sensible comparison between rope work & non
rope work I'll not be convinced. The recent MEWP vs rope work study
commisioned at great expense (no doubt) was, in my eyes, a waste of
valuable
resources that explained little about when & where using a mewp may be
advantageous over rope work, or which models were better suited to
different
scenarios. And by the way I do use mewp's when they are advantageous to
getting the work done, usually on a cost basis!
Common sense training disappeared some time ago as far as I see, & if the
operator, of whichever system is being used, is not making second by second
assessments of the situation in front of him/her unsafe actions will lead
to
mishaps, eventually. Our certification system does not necessarily make
safer climbers with a greater understanding of what they are doing. Nor
does
our tick box risk assessment mentality always make the work any safer, but
it sure does defer litigation when things go wrong.
Oops!

That aside Jon, we should always consider other safer working practices
nowadays as part of the site specific Risk Assessment, to include
MEWP/Crane combinations and to hell with dangling around on a bits of
rope.
