The mill is/was Aston Timber and they were paying when I was in business
around £38 per cubic metre at factory gate for a spec that required
something like a metre between whorls which is quite doable for plantation
stuff or any of those high-growth hybrids. When I last went they were busy
peeling for spills to be used in school science labs and the likes, but
fruit boxes are the mainstay. I guess transport costs would limit the
usefulness of this market to east anglians and east midlanders. I will try
and find a number for you, assuming the mill is still trading.

Poplar may also be bought to order by generalist mills making one off lorry
beds (this may be another myth, admittedly) but certainly they used to buy
for pallet wood. When I holidayed in remotest Pakistan I saw lots of
Lombardy poplars growing around mountain villages where they are prized as
construction timber due to a reluctance to burn. I always keep a few poplar
logs in the basket if I want to put the fire out but it would be difficult
to market them on that basis.

Do I understand you right? There is a mill that wants poplar for veneer?!
Call me stupid, but I didn't know poplar had much use beyond matches. Do you
have their contact details? I threw away loads of poplar last year.

Makes you wonder about the other items on offer does it not? Correct me if
I'm wrong but with the exception of poplar to one mill in East Anglia, am I
not right that there are no veneer mills left in the UK, although a few
buyers still advertise then ship over to Europe when they have a load? Has
any tree surgeon actally ever sold a veneer butt for real money (£8 plus per
cube) or is it an arban myth?

This is a bit of a chortle

Anyone got a grand to lash out on a lump of timber of unknown provenance
allegedly a veneer quality Oak stem?

It's got a lovely shake in it making it the dearest lump of firewood I ever
saw.

Have a look at this and scroll about half way down the page.
