Forgive my ignorance but what information does the
Atterberg tests (PL, LL and PI) yield re:
shrinkage/susceptibility to dessication in areas of
tree roots.  

My geotechnical knowledge is somewhat rusty but can
you tell what sort of clay you're dealing with from
these tests (Kaolinite, montmorillonite, vermiculite etc)?
