Was this the statics and dynamics seminar?
I think the point is to avoid the 'lion-tailing' kind of thinning.
It doesn't necessarily invalidate the whole idea of thinning.

I think it is important to consider form/species etc. I saw some pretty
convincing video at a recent seminar which illustrated how branches,
rather
than having the oft' cited sail effect, can actually have a damping effect
of stem movement. Thinned out trees and those with naturally small crowns
were all over the place whilst the more fully crowned neighbours waved
around to a far less alarming degree. I believe we'll be hearing a lot
more
about this and it will be yet another thing I'll never fully understand.
