In theory there shouldn't be any problem, as BS3998 refers to leaving an "even" density of foliage. In practice however it would need a fairly skilled and well motivated climber to get out to all the branch ends on a big Monterey. Mature Montereys "lion tail" themselves naturally and the kind of glorified crown lifting that often passes for thinning would just make matters worse. Trouble is once its done its virtually impossible to correct. As a side issue, would de coning it reduce much weight?
