RE: Old Holm Oaks

Hi Bettina, I agree with John on this but I have inherited a number of
reduced TPO'd Holm Oaks which don't look too bad considering - very vigorous
regrowth.
One owner appears to have the height reduced one year ( leaving an umbrella
shape ) and then arranges for a reduction around the circumference several
years later.
There is the problem though that he is committed to doing it regularly but
at least the tree is retained and still contributes to the area given the
limited space it is in.

Hi Bettina - holm oaks are a pretty popular species here, many in exposed
places, and in my experience they are some of the toughest trees out there.
It would have to be pretty serious to fell it. In fact it would have to be
pretty serious to even prune it.

If you do end up pruning they grow back incredibly well.
Good luck
John

Subject: Old Holm Oaks

Dear all,
Scenario - two mature multi-stemmed holm oaks in a very popular public
park. Both have old vertical wounds to some of their stems, and they
are on a windy exposed hillside.

Two recommendations given - 1) fell. 2) Retain but crown reduce.

Does anyone have any experience on how likely holm oaks are to split
apart / fall over, and how they respond to surgery works?

All help gratefully received.
Regards, B
