HI Bettina,
I have not seen any Holm Oaks split, etc. but they are incredibly
difficult
to crown reduce and grow back very slowly - they do not really lend
themselves to crown reduction - they look awful if they are hit hard
(you
lose the natural shape) - perhaps a "combi-prune" (a phrase coined by
an
erstwhile colleague of mine to describe a mixture of a crown thin and
a
crown reduction) might work.
Felling would be a shame.....
Regards
Bo

Subject: Old Holm Oaks
Dear all,
Scenario - two mature multi-stemmed holm oaks in a very popular public
park. Both have old vertical wounds to some of their stems, and they
are on a windy exposed hillside.
Two recommendations given - 1) fell. 2) Retain but crown reduce.
Does anyone have any experience on how likely holm oaks are to split
apart / fall over, and how they respond to surgery works?
All help gratefully received.
Regards, B
