Hard landscaping wins every time!
York stone will be slightly porous; and the joints'll crack directly
anyway.................

Subject: hard surfaces over tree roots

I have a little problem which is that new paving surfaces in the city centre
are york stone slabs sealed at the joints with something impearmeable. I
have advised that tree roots beneath will not flourish so existing trees
may die back and new trees will not root beyond their pits.

It seems the seal is necessary because high powered street cleaners (so
called abrasion machines) make a mess of unsealed joints and we have just
invested heavily in same. Cleanliness enjoys a high profile in the local
scene.

Does anyone know of ventilation products, I don't know, some kind of
proprietary grille, that can be used to get round the problem.

Ironically the same department that has bought super cleaning machines has
baulked at the investment in calibrated deicing machines and prefers to
shovel the stuff off the back of a waggon.

Is my concern about the roots well founded and can anyone offer me any
references that support it?

Thanks as ever.
