It sounds like the sort of substrate that Qilex will thrive on - especially
if the scalpings etc are limestone based. Yes, underground guy it, and have
a decent sized planting pit, and make sure it is irrigated to start with;
and it'll probably surprise you - they are amazingly tough trees

Subject: RE: Planting oak into hard landscape
Interesting and timely that this thread should come up...we have been
told about the plan to plant a 5m holm oak into an area of gravel,
overlying scalpings overlying rubble overlying subsoil. Likely to be
done by a contractor unless I put my foot down.
I'm concerned that this will involve digging a big hole in the grot,
then sticking a splendid specimen in. I feel that the tree is unlikely
to want to move out of the hole and its rootball into the surrounding
grot and it will then get to a certain size and fall over due to
inadequate development of lateral roots.
Any thoughts? Or a way of planting a big evergreen into such unpromising
substrate? Or do we just guy and anchor?

It is averred by our landscape architect that oak are unsuitable for
planting into hard landscape because you need a small one for successful
establishment. Please someone tell me this is not so!
