I would be surprised if most of the coppice stools aren't hollow and
therefore rings uncountable even if you were to fell one to ground
level. I have seen extended small leaved lime stools in Lincs some 5-6m
diameter which have become a circle of individual stools though
obviously originating from the same parent, though quite possibly
millenia ago. Ash I see are rarely more than 2-3' diameter, although we
know Lime will layer whereas Ash may not which may suggest Ash tend to
die out after several centurie and perhaps be replaced by new seedling
growth.
George Peterken would be a good contact point, or possibly Oliver
Rackham - FC Research at Alice Holt (Silviculture) may also be worth a
call for any past references

A colleague of mine who works with broadleafed woodlands and

schemes is currently doing some work in a woodland which has in the
past been coppiced, possibly not for about 70/80 years but prior to
that on a fairly regular basis. Does anyone have any experience of

you can date the trees which have been coppiced, perhaps by the
root/tree base? Has any work been done on this sort of thing? Are
there rings to count in the root base??
Any ideas or references would be great.
