RE: Arboricultural euthanasia and phallic trees

I beg to differ. I have 10 years London experience. Buckets of Plane and
Lime pollards and very little space. Expensive to maintain. But a wonderful
amenity envisaged by our predecessors. There were always those arguing for
selective removals and replacements to ensure continuous (note not
'sustainable') amenity. I disagree, why interfere too early. I was enjoying
the foresight of the Victorians - they might justifiably have a fit if they
knew we were changing things just because we think things are getting a bit
old and space a bit tight. And anyway, when did a Plane pollard die of old
age? How long do they live over here?

We scoff at over refined precious reverence for individual trees and snigger
at 'tree huggers' - and there is much in that attitude. But lets not be
blinded by what we think is a professional pragmatism. How does hanging on
to trees longer than you would advocate lead to a permanent loss of tree
cover? Once you have culled your trees and accepted smaller or thinner trees
you have lost that space forever. You're right I am missing something.

John
I think you are missing the point - by a mile - perhaps because you are in
the New Forest - hardly a busy Urban Metropolis.

Try and get hold of a book by Henry Arnold called 'Trees in Urban Design'.
The opening paragraph states:

"The most persistent problem confronting every designer who works with trees
is their seductive appeal. The remarkable aesthetic power of trees distracts
artists so much that their potential for building dense organic compositions
has been replaced by an over-refined, precious reverence for individual
trees. Trees are the most exquisite and most sparingly apportioned raw
material of urban design. Our cities display a mere dollop of their sensual
colour and form. There are exceptions to this rule but generally - we fail
to design with our most humane raw material."

In London for example, there just isn't much space for trees. It's a rare
luxury and increasingly endangered. If trees aren't culled before their time
future generations (not us) will notice the drop or gap in amenity.

Thank God, Ted Green is not a London tree officer!

Peter
