Look in the 10th Edition of the Architectural Specifications. Jim has an
extensive section about tree volumes, spaces, details etc.

I seem to recall a piece by Jim Urban on rooting volumes. Maybe relied on
the Nina Bassuk work. Not sure. And Todd Watson at Texas A&M did a study
as well. You might search on those.

Hi Bill
I have had a recent job looking at why trees were dieing in a car park.
with
a bit of digging I found the tree pits were in most cases only 200-300mm
deep. so lack of available rooting area did for them in the drought last
year.
An arb journal a couple of years ago suggested a minimum of 5 cubic
metres
for a medium sized tree but Trees in the Urban Landscape P J Trowbridge
&
N
L Bassuk provides a detailed method for assessing rooting volumes (
heavy
going though) but worth it if your looking at long term survival.
Have a look and see what you think

Hey up,
We've touched on the subject of how much rooting volume a tree might
need
before....
Could we extrapolate such figures from nursery container growing
manuals?
Bill. Bill
The answer is 2, but i'll come to that.
There are scales of container size for difference sizes of stock.
However, such stock has its water and nutrients supplied at regular
intervals.
In other words, the container does not provide all the needs of the
tree - they need to be added artificially.
This might not be a problem, if the trees were to be maintained.
For a better rule of thumb for planting, plan for the following -
2 cu ft of soil per every 2 sq ft of crown projection
Regards
Adam

Hey up,
We've touched on the subject of how much rooting volume a tree might
need
before, usually while discussing Amsterdam tree soil and the like. But
has
anybody any experience of trees in large planting boxes where the root
growth
is
genuinely limited?
I mean maybe in a giant container in some densely built environment
type of
thing? What with ever higher building densities it seems such figures
would be
very useful, so we could dictate to the Architect precisely how much
soil
volume we would require for growing trees to such a size.
Could we extrapolate such figures from nursery container growing
manuals?
Bill.
