I knew some folks who'd invested in a company to exploit "noise cancellation
technology." In theory, every noise which is made up of vibrations of
particular waveform can be cancelled out by an opposite sort of waveform. A
properly set up device can calculate and produce it. Apparently nothing
much came of the compant. Don't know if the idea was no good or if it was
k=just difficult to do. Maybe too expensive to do. I have noticed in the
airline magazines they are selling "noise cancellation" headsets to offer
the air traveller a quiet journey.

I understand the difficulty with chippers isn't the engine noise, it's the
`hammering' of the blades against whatever is being chipped. The noise
being allowed out of the box by virtue of the fact that it has to open to
allow for the machine to be fed. This topped off by a handy megaphone
shaped feed chute. The only way I could see this being solved is by
replacing the speed and weight/momentum approach of most chippers with the
slow, relentless, highly geared approach of, say, sewage munchers. I
recall (can't forget) looking at the munchers as an option for high volume
green waste reduction and vicious things they are but not too noisy.
