Hi Jon
I recently went to the ISA conference in Holland and was most impressed by a
very interesting guy called Huib Sneep. He's originally a landscape arcitect
and his company (BSI) is invollved in all kinds of municipal and corporate
projects.
I brought him over here recently to talk to the Hants tree officer group
about moving big trees (current record mature Horse Chestnut at 200
tonnes!!!) and 'tree-soil' (which is in fact rock and aeration pipes) and
some amazing projects in both cities and rural/aquatic areas.
Very fascinating and enthusiastic bloke, English speaking of course (now
also has an office in Fair Oak, Hants) and I'm sure would be delighted to
show you around - his company also has their own tour bus and annually he
brings over a load of his employees to Britain to tour round finding big and
ancient trees, which he reminded us (AGAIN) just don't exist in any numbers
throughout mainland Europe like they do here.
Have a chat to some the Hants TO group (Dermot, Ben, Bryan etc) and let them
tell you what they thought about it.
I don't think you'd need to make any other arrangements after seeing what
those guys are doing in Holland!
Give us a call, glad to chat further,
and can I come too?
Regards,
Bill

Subject: Dutch Study Tour
Dear All
I am in the early stages of trying to arrange a study tour for a group of
2nd year ND Arb students this coming Easter. Having had a thoroughly
enjoyable and informative study tour to Holland myself in 1996 I am keen to
return with my own group. I have a rough idea of what I would like to
include on the itinery.
A tree nursery specialising in the growing of advanced nursery
stock/semi-mature trees.
A visit / talk by one of Amsterdams municipal tree officers.
A visit to a botanical garden/arboretum
A visit to a working site of established Dutch arboricultural contractors
An research institution dealing with tree pathology.
I would be interested to know if any of the forum have any knowledge,
experience, contacts or ideas with regards to arboriculture in Holland. The
internet is a wonderful place for gathering information, but my command of
the language is non-existent and subsequently makes things a little tricky.
If any one can offer any help or guidance please do not hesitate to
contact me off-forum.
Many thanks in anticipation.
