If you had the choice of buying semi-mature trees or advanced nursery
sized stock, would you prefer containerised using the 'spring ring' or
container grown 'white containers'.

I've seen very encouraging results with street trees planted in too small
pockets using Barchams white bags. Certainly better results than the old bare
root 'standards.' The white bags were usually 75 litres with 12-14s,
sometimes
slightly bigger. You'll occasionally find wire in the root ball suggesting
that
the stock is containerised root balled stuff, but it always seems to be well
developed since containerising.

I'd like to think that the smaller trees always did better than the
semi-matures but we moved quite a few semis with a Newman tree trailer about
20 years
ago and where these were left alone and established they did alright.
Sheffield
Council have just seen fit to cut down some of the semis we planted in front
of the John Lewis (Coles) store in Sheffield. They'd reached 15 metres or so,
there's still one left. Overall I'd like to know whether the money men
thought
it was worth it.

I dunno who felled the things, I'd've liked to see how the tree had occluded
the brush handle with which we filled the hole drilled through the trunk!

Bill.
