'Dark Hedges' - Trees Under Threat

Subject: 'Dark Hedges' - Trees Under Threat
From: Paul Hawksford
Date: Jan 25 2005 15:39:07
Subject:

High Hedges (101 Beech - approx 200yrs old). Trees are subject to a TPO -
April
2004

Site:

Bregagh Road, Stranocum, Co. Antrim, Northern Ireland

Consultants Proposals:

Fell 27 trees due to structural defects. Extensively prune remainder by
reducing end-weight on overhanging branches and removing deadwood (the
consultant has said the remainder are "very large trees with heavy limbs over
the road").

Target: Bregagh Road (currently closed due to the potential risk posed by the
trees!!!!). Target usage - approx 4 cars per hour.

Question: Why????????????????????? What justification for pruning, what
alternatives (target move etc.) and the likely outcome following extensive
pruning (David et al). The attached photograph is on the front cover of the
'Ireland's Historic Trees' book BTCV publication.

A meeting to discuss the proposals is scheduled for 27th January at 11.00am on
site. I'd certainly appreciate your comments by Wed afternoon if possible.

Thanks...

Paul H.
