Sorry, but it's hot and humid and maybe my brain is starting to fall apart.

Someone asked me today:

Why do some trees regenerate well from stooling/coppicing/pollarding or just
hard cutting back in whatever form - but others do not?


I didn't have a structural/physiological answer.
