Tahir
Do you really mean a 30m wide hedge?
Don't get me wrong, W I D E hedges are really good and this will be great
cover but 30m could give you a real wooded belt, perhaps with only a couple
of rows of climax trees in the centre (e.g. oak) but with really good
shrubs and 'edge' species small trees producing broad graduated edges both
sides, this will provide more variety and biodiversity and landscape value,
though may possibly produce less biomass??? (though remember you'll get 25m
of vertical biomass with an oak rather than just 5-7m). You can (could) get
felt mats but with that number of trees I wouldn't bother and either invert
turf and mulch with woodchip or just use the dreaded herbicide. If it's
improved pasture you won't be losing much and if it isn't improved pasture
you probably shouldn't be planting it at all. You'll only need it for 3
years or so anyway. Mulch mats are a bit of a pain and felt ones quite
expensive in large numbers, and you either have to be really careful
installing them or they need a lot of maintenance. Any perennial herbs in
the grass can push them up too.
Hope your orchard will have a good number of local varieties. Contact me
off forum if you need some suggested sources.

<<I'm new to the list so a bit about me and my project:
I've just bought a farm which was previously pasture, I'll be planting
around 8 acres of native hedging (a 30 metre thick belt) plus around 30
acres of orchard, what I'm looking for is a mulch mat that will last a
few years and biodegrade completely, i.e. no polypropylene backing.
Does anybody know of a suitable product?
Thanks Tahir>>
