We use a straw based mat out here, sewn onto a fine nylon mesh. By the time
the vegetation has taken the straw has long gone leaving just the mesh which
does not seem to be a big issue. Not sure if you can get that in the UK.
Look under a google search for bioengineering, mulch mat, siltation control,
slope stabilisation etc.

Subject: Mulch mats

Hi

I'm new to the list so a bit about me and my project:

I've just bought a farm which was previously pasture, I'll be planting
around 8 acres of native hedging (a 30 metre thick belt) plus around 30
acres of orchard, what I'm looking for is a mulch mat that will last a few
years and biodegrade completely, i.e. no polypropylene backing.

Does anybody know of a suitable product?

Thanks

Tahir
