Here in NE US we have huge problems with white tailed deer. Fencing seems to
be most effective. It does not need to be "stockproof" if that means strong
enough to prevent cattle running through. It does have to be tall enough
that deer will not jump over it which means at least 8 feet. These can be
done with a light wire mesh. Or relatively inexpensively with plastic mesh
designed for the purpose. Still 2000m will not be cheap.
Various repellants (taste and or smell) can be sprayed on plants. These
range from hot peper (capsicum) compounds, to soaps, to putrid egg solids, to
various fungicides (thiram I think is used), to various animal urines. These
are not cheap either and in a rainy English winter might need to be applied
multiple times.
Homeowners have tried motion sensitive water sprayers. Little bags of human
hair salvaged from the barber shop.
In a setting like yours keeping dogs might be effective if you let them roam.
You can bury an "invisible fence" along the boundary and have the dogs wear
collars that keep them from crossing the fence once they are trained to it.

I'm planting 40 acres of native woodland and orchard, and have just been
made aware that we have occasional visits from some Muntjac deer, is
there a viable alternative to stock proof fencing (I can't really afford
the planting AND 2000 mtrs @ 13.50)
Thanks
