That's what I'm worried about, I can see that they'll love it.

If you plant 40 acres of native woodland you will see the population increase
and roe deer to boot.
Best advice, if money for protection is tight, plant 20 acres instead. No
point in doing it wrong, I'm afraid. False economies and all that.
Have you tried to get a grant? FC grants should cover most of cost of
planting and protection for native woodland. Defra or LA may well cover 50%
of orchard costs.
13.50/m for fencing sounds a little steep to me, so look around.
Unfortunately 1.2m standard tree shelters are not appropriate for orhcard
and nut trees which are usually 1/4 or 1/2 standards / multistems with
branches below 1.2m. You can make your own plastic mesh wider ones. The
Farm Forestry Co. always has a good show of mesh at the forestry shows.
Paints have to be applied annually and don't allow for new growth. Lion's
dung does not work. Brambles can deter, but no guarantee.
Willows have been planted in the alps as the sacrifice of choice, where they
herd the deer through carefully designed rides and glades with the willow
planted therein and the stalkers not located far away.
Off the top of my head, as an alternative to dogs, I wonder how deer respond
to turkeys or other foul? They are traditionally farmed under orchards,
after all and quite scary.
