I'm not an expert on deer and most experience is of fallow but many people
are and you need to contact your local deer group via the FC, there is also
advice via the deer initiative etc.
Do the Muntjac pass through your land or is it a part of their grazing
ground? If the former and their movements can be traced (look for slots in
damp ground like for Fallow I guess) then you can use that to guide your
protection. If you do fence, clearly this needn't be so high as for Fallow
or Red.
If the numbers are small damage might be minimal and controlled by shooting
and as much presence and disturbance on site by dogs as possible as deer
and dogs really don't get on.
Muntjac are only small so I'd jettison those troublesome mulch mats (as
previous discussion) and spend the money on some netlon guards, or even go
direct to the manufacture and buy some tough vole/strimmer guards cut to
extra long lengths (I'm presuming most of your stock will be standards or
half standards with a good length of clear stem?).
