I think it's worth noting a thing or two about nomenclature, classification
and identification.
Whilst it's useful to keep up to date, I don't really believe it is too
critical (in most day to day cases, excluding definitive research) to make
sure you are using the "latest" name, which I believe you or others may have
suggested is the "correct" name in comparison to older names.
As long as you state the authority (the name of the botanist using the name
for the first time) you can continue using older names without too much
trouble - as long as all that has happened are name changes, as opposed to
classification splits or lumping together of species/cultivar(s).
Unfortunately few mass produced tree books give you the authority, and you
have to rely on less frequently produced texts such as Mitchell and
Dallimore and Jackson.
In the case of Leyland cypress, noone is suggesting that the hybrid has
changed in any way in this nomenclature uncertainty, merely it's genetic
background/history is being reexamined.
x Cupressosyparis leylandii (Jackson and Dallimore) Dallimore
(with the latin bits in either bold or italic)
Should keep you going for as long as you want, and keep researching
botanists away!

Thanks for the various replies!
It would seem that unless someone can come up with a surer method which
catches all, our best procedure is to spend ?15.00 a year (current) on the
RGS Plant Finder.
If the name is not in there I'll take exception to anyone correcting me on
nomenclature.
For info. the 2005-6 volume has Leyland back as X Cupressocyparis leylandii
and the Cedars still as separate species.
Happy new year
Dave
