RE: A bleeding good idea?

I think we have all been working on the assumption - not previously
gainsayed by those with laboratory facilities - that these symptoms have
been caused by Phytophthora cactorum. It now seems that the FC think it
is not P. cactorum but have admitted that they don't know what it is.
This much I gleaned from the national press rather than a professional
source. Does anyone know more?

Hi all, with reference to the current widespread outbreak of Horse
Chestnut
Bleeding Canker:
We have a widespread occurrence of this disease in our district with
every
indication that it is getting worse. It has become more noticeable of
late
with even small trees affected.
It seems reasonable that the longer an infected tree remains standing
the
more chance it has of passing on the infection (I know that we don't yet
know the mechanism by which it spreads) to other trees in the area.
Would it then be reasonable to recommend that all infected trees are
felled
as a sanitation measure as our experience indicates that trees here very
seldom recover and and are often seriously structurally damaged by the
bark
loss in any case.
Obviously we can only request this on private land but I am interested
to
hear peoples opinions as this problem is not going to be going away in a
hurry.
