Who said anything about SSSIs? Managing woods for SSSI reasons and
managing for profitable timber production which is what Jim Knight is
referring to are two very different animals (or lack of them).

I would have thought that the condition assessment of almost any English
SSSI not in favourable condition would provide such evidence. If it is
declining, the reason is usually lack of management. If it is
recovering, the reason is almost always management. There are, of
course, exceptions to both these generalisations. These assessments are
of fairly recent origin and can be seen online at English Nature's
website. I am unaware of any work to summarise these findings but I'd be
very surprised if nobody had done any.

I haven't got beyond the Forward and already I need help. Jim Knight MP
claims we have growing evidence of the impact of the lack of management
on biodiversity. (I presume he means negative). That's a hell of claim,
does anyone (Ed?) know to what work he refers?
