Thanks for that Julie. However, without wishing to labour the point too
much, I do take issue with the negative projection of unmanaged woodland
or worse "derelict" woodland. What does an managed woodland have that
less managed woodland lacks - is it standing deadwood, fallen deadwood:
I think not; might be decaying plastic or lack of brambles (supports
more biodiversity than any other British species I believe), is it
extensive thorn scrubs (themselves the father of new oaks without the
use of plastic), is it climbing plants or perhaps compacted extraction
racks?
Of course coppices (and other sub-divisions of woodlands) have great
value precisely because they are intensively managed pre-revolution
industrial landscapes but to promote a generic good/not so good on the
basis of management or lack of it is a pseudo-moral judgement we can do
without.

Defra have published, alongside the EFS consultation paper, a "Review of
the
Evidence Base for Forestry Policy". It includes a section on
biodiversity which
(as Matthew suggests) draws on information collected by English Nature.
Relevant link is below but, be warned, the report totals 119 pages.
