Just visted a superbly managed property during "open garden days." A Cedrus
atlantica had several burlap "bandages" around the trunk to discourage the
sapsuckers from continued feeding on rows of holes they had started. Nearby
there was a Cedrus lebani with several 10-12 year old leaders in the top....
looking as if the original top had been broken off in a storm. In fact, it
had been girdled and killed by sapsuckers. Thus the caution with the other
tree.

Subject: RE: sap-sucking woodpeckers
Has anyone noticed fairly manic behaviour by Greater Spotted Woodpeckers
making many regimented horizontal lines of cuts into tree trunks?
The internet and literature suggest they are sap-sucking rather than
looking
for insects.
