Hi Robert,
I would not often recommend any "bracing" work, however, I have been known to
install the odd "Cobra" or two. If put in right, they can be a very useful
tool. Check out...
http://www.aces.uiuc.edu/~isa-sca/newsletter/cobra.html for an interesting
article on cobra ropes if you like.
Or go to www.afwarehouse.co.uk to find out how much it all costs.
Simon Valente.
P.S. Think long and hard about the long term effects of what you do. I have
seen many a stem broken off at the point of bracing, often requiring major
reduction work to restore some sort of order. Its too early to tell what the
long term effects of "cobra" ropes will be. If reduction is an option, it may
well be better to reduce the tree. I have seen walnuts come back from very
hard pruning. If they are pruned regularly, say about once every ten years,
they can last a long time and have a very high "amenity" value due to the
amount of attention they get. (They also provide regular work for hard
working arbs:-)
Trees are for life, not just for christmas.

Subject: Bracing query
Dear All
Can anyone help regarding a spec. for a bracing system for a multi-stem
Walnut. There are around 10 stems, more or less in a circle and between 250 &
350mm dia. @ the optimum bracing height.
I believe there is a thing called a 'Ring' brace where you have a central
collar with the braces emanating from it.
Has anyone had experience of this (or other appropriate system), and is it
difficult to set up? & who would supply the gear?
Any help much appreciated
Robert @RGS
