Newly planted woodland on ex-agricultural land. Heavy clay. Planted as

Never mind the text books as they mostly apply to forestry sites.

The key question is what sort of agricultural land - grass or cereal?

50mm/ yr on compacted grassland with poor weed control is not uncommon.
