Also lots of similar substances used to absorb oil spills.  I have some in
my workshop, I could go and see what its called.

On a related note - I don't doubt the toxic effect of diesel on the soil,
and tree, but would the tree actually take it up?

Cat litter is about as good as anything for absorbing oil or water, 
though obviously using a water jet will blow it all over the place.

Regarding disposal most council Civic Amenity sites have a place for 
waste oil and associated stuff.
