I recall Roy Finch showing a bunch of young Arbs a decayed bit of Walnut  
where the screws (not bolts) appeared to have definitely initiated the decay. 
I  
did brace a Walnut for Sheffield Uni a few years ago and bolted it with Roy's 
 
experience in mind. Unfortunately some prat of a landscape gardener went and  
felled it cos he was frightened of it and I never got chance to inspect  
further.
 
Geoff Scaife at Rease Heath used to have a collection of bits of Elm that  
had been braced but succumbed to DED that demonstrated the callusing quite  
beautifully. Dunno if anyone knows if they're still there or there's any 
piccies  
that can be digitised.
