Strange. I wandered round the Major OAk with Ted Green a coupla years ago
and there seemed to be more Fomes than Piptoporus round there. In our local
Ecclesall Woods we see plenty of Pipto but barely a Fomes that I can think
of.
It might suggest something about how the local woods were managed? I mean
removal of dead wood was routine in some Sheffield Parks/woods up until
enlightenment maybe some 20 years ago. And all sorts of iffy tree felling
went on
during the miner's strike.
