Jonathon,

I have never had to go to those extremes. Not good use of officer time and
public funds.

I would imagine that your members and managers really have not got a good
grasp of what being a responsible tree manager is all about, let alone a
grasp of the immensity of the task.

When I managed the Council's tree stock we would only discuss matters that
were of public prominence, such as the management of the trees around the
Council offices and anything contentious. The daily routine was not of
concern for members or even managers ... it was my concern. That's why you
are employed, as an expert/specialist, so that senior officers and members do
not have to worry or get embroiled in the day to day affairs. I wonder if
someone hasn't misunderstood the protocols. The CEO here was always keen to
know if "we had lost many trees in a storm", but this was just a passing
interest that she may have fed back to members for interest, as a gauge of
how well we were managing.

If you are being asked to do this then you should organise the way you do it
so that it minimises the work you put into it; for example give a monthly
toll and report or even a quarterly appraisal. You probably haven't got time
to do otherwise. Give an overall appraisal of how many windblown trees you
had to deal with ... be sparing.

Ron.

Hello Forum

I am interested to know if LA Tree Managers/Officers are expected to
inform local councillors of tree work in response to an emergency
situation. I do not mean planned work, purely work to control an
immediate and unacceptable risk to public safety.

If you do inform councillors in these situations, are you expected to
do this in events as per a few weeks ago during the storm?

I am currently trying to establish a 'no consultation required'
approach for emergency situations as currently managers are asking me to
inform members in all situations. I think that this is reasonable in a
planned work programme on contentious trees but in an emergency
situation I think it is unreasonable on the basis that our time should
be focused on sorting out the hazard and ensuring Officers are doing
everything they can to prevent any incidents or being done for
manslaughter!!

Your comments and opinions are appreciated.

Thanks
