RE: putting a price on trees

Sorry should have made that clear I am not interested in putting in costs of
maintenance etc I am just interested in the amenity value of a given tree ie:
if the tree has an amenity value of £200,000 the costs of regular maintenance
would in my view be irrelevant

That shouldn't form part of the equation as it would be part of the owners
Duty of care. You would not expect to carry out any work other than formative
pruning until the tree has reached ailment Age i.e. mature and beyond. Isn't
there a Helliwell System which the AA published some time ago and is today
(with additional cost of living/inflation rises) still being used to
determine amenity value, other than felling/replacement costs.

Does that price include ongoing maintenance/inspections etc?

An almost impossible question to answer!

How about:

Take the cost of the maximum size of tree that you could plant if you
were to buy and plant it as a mast/standard today.

Then estimate the number of years it would take to grow from that size
to its' present size.

Do a compound revenue calculation to achieve the cost today.

Add on all the non financial values (?)

Sit down feeling weak at the knees.

Example:

Big oak tree planted and maintained properly to establishment: (say)
£750 Time to reach the stature of the tree you are looking at: (say)
100 years Current bank of England interest rate: 6%

Calculation: 750 X (1.06 Yx100) = £254 476

Add on the non financial benefit and you end up with £X?

(to replicate this on a scientific calculator enter 750 X 1.06 [then
press the YX button] 100 = £254 476.86)

Am I far off the beaten track?

I have now been asked several times to put a £ value to a tree,
having never gone down this avenue before can someone please HELP.....
I see this being a great help in saving trees on a development site as
£ value talks to many at all levels in the planning chain...

Thanks

Chris
