Don't you need something more objective than 2p and 100 000 persons per
annum. One could argue about those figures/methodology until the cows came
home, and you would be none the wiser.

How about for a 100 year old oak tree in a town centre

Could you put a value on each person seeing the tree.

The value to each person seeing the tree could be 2p

Times that by the number of people in a year for instance 100,000 people in
a year ( 100,000 x 2p = £2000 )

Take the £2000 and times by the age of the tree

So the amenity value would be £200,000

I was just using the 2p as an example !

An almost impossible question to answer!

How about:

Take the cost of the maximum size of tree that you could plant if you were
to buy and plant it as a mast/standard today.

Then estimate the number of years it would take to grow from that size to
its' present size.

Do a compound revenue calculation to achieve the cost today.

Add on all the non financial values (?)

Sit down feeling weak at the knees.

Example:

Big oak tree planted and maintained properly to establishment: (say) £750
Time to reach the stature of the tree you are looking at: (say) 100 years
Current bank of England interest rate: 6%

Calculation: 750 X (1.06 Yx100) = £254 476

Add on the non financial benefit and you end up with £X?

(to replicate this on a scientific calculator enter 750 X 1.06 [then press
the YX button] 100 = £254 476.86)

Am I far off the beaten track?

I have now been asked several times to put a £ value to a tree, having
never gone down this avenue before can someone please HELP..... I see this
being a great help in saving trees on a development site as £ value talks to
many at all levels in the planning chain...

Thanks
