Ian,
I've used the Stihl polesaws plenty in the past. I always found it
wasn't so much that they were underpowered but that the clutch would
slip far too easily - the engine is a conventioanl strimmer engine with
centrifugal clutch, with power transmitted to the saw by a solid
telescopic shaft (so no power losses there other than a small amount of
friction).
I think they would be vastly improved with a better transmission system,
and a head that swivels so you can get the cuts above and below the
branch rather than at an angle. Anyone from Stihl reading this? No?
Maybe I ought to patent the idea then......
In addition, there is a temptation to use them for branches that are
beyond the design limit of the machine.

Working At Height Regulations don't apply to Pole saws, the machine thatallow you to cut branches from the ground without venturing into thetrees .A great idea but the product I have witnessed performs poorly, often catches the chain as it lacks the power to cut through the wood at speed. Maybe this is the nature of the machine as it loses power through the extension rod. If I'm incorrect in this assumption and that there is a product that works as one would expect then please contact me withyour experiences and recommendations.Ian http://www.arun.gov.ukThis email and any files transmitted with it are confidential and intended solely for the use of the individual or entity to whom they are addressed.
