What about establishment? Doesn't beech like to be well watered to start
with? Certainly seen plenty of dead/dying young beech hedges round my
way (not this year of course). What about Hornbeam?

If your box become unhappy - perhaps an alternative would be Beech
Hedging? This is the only stuff I can get to grow
under the very dense shade of tree Beech - and I'd suggest even shadier
than Field Maple (admittedly a heavy-shader) or
Pear ( a rather lighter-shade than A. campastre.
When you think about it - the 'juniors' have to be tolerated by the
'parents' - or there would never be any self-generating
Beech woods !
Because they are going to be planted in a relatively 'tough' environment
- I'd recommend a staggered/double-row of plants
(40-60 Bare-Roots ) - planted 18" / 45cm apart between plants-in-the-row
& 15" / 30cm between rows. (This works out to
5.25 plants/lin.metre )

Practically evergreen & the dead leaves hang-on until the following
Spring.
Cheaper to buy than Box ( by approx. 5x - as Box has to be
containered/container-grown/rootballed )

Negligible difference in trimming costs. One could 'integrate' a few
purple/copper plants for an occasional variation.

Hello all

Should be a straighforward one this:

What's the consensus on underplanting some new extra-heavy standard
street trees ( Pryus Chanticlere and Acer campestre) with box hedging?
I'm worried the competition from the box will undermine the trees'
efforts to establish themselves, but would like some feedback. (If you
search the net for this you find stuff on how the trees compete with
your garden shrubs but not t'other way round!) I've advised on including
OM and upgrading the topsoil to BS3882 premium grade, but would still
like some informed comment on whether it's a good idea to underplant
straight away. I seem to have some vague idea that box is a hungry plant
too.
